Redox Research

SS-31 (elamipretide) is a synthetic mitochondria-targeting tetrapeptide. In published research, SS-31 was reported to associate with cardiolipin on the inner mitochondrial membrane and to re-energize ischemic mitochondria in cell and tissue models (Birk et al, 2013, PMID 23813215).

In a separate study, the mitochondrially-targeted tetrapeptide elamipretide was examined for neuroprotective effects in models of neurodegeneration (Nhu et al, 2021, PMID 35111001). SS-31 is characterized in the literature as an aromatic-cationic peptide that concentrates in mitochondria. For research purposes only.
